Web hosting is the least glamorous line on any website quote and one of the easiest places to make an expensive mistake. Hosting is genuinely cheap now, which means the question is not "what is the lowest price" but "what am I giving up at that price".
Here is what matters, what is marketing noise, and the costs that only appear later.
What hosting actually is
Your website is a set of files and usually a database. Hosting is the server that stores them and serves them to visitors. Without it, your domain points nowhere.
Three types are commonly sold to small businesses:
- Shared hosting โ many sites on one server, sharing its resources. Cheapest, and genuinely fine for most brochure and small business sites.
- VPS โ a reserved slice of a server. More predictable performance; appropriate for busier sites and larger stores.
- Dedicated โ an entire server. Rarely necessary for an SME.
Most businesses reading this want shared hosting, chosen carefully.
What to actually look for
SSD or NVMe storage
Non-negotiable in 2026. If a host is still selling mechanical drives for web hosting, that tells you how old the platform is.
Free SSL, renewing automatically
Browsers mark sites without HTTPS as "not secure", and it is a ranking signal. SSL should be included and should renew itself. Ask specifically: does it auto-renew? An expired certificate makes your site look dangerous to every visitor, and it is a surprisingly common outage cause.
Daily backups you can restore yourself
Ask two questions: how often, and have you tested a restore? "We have backups" and "we can demonstrably put your site back" are different claims. Ideally you can trigger a restore from the control panel without opening a ticket.
A real uptime commitment
99.9% is the normal benchmark โ roughly 43 minutes of downtime a month. Treat "100% uptime" as marketing; nobody achieves it. What matters more is whether there is a status page and how incidents get communicated.
Support that answers
Cheap hosting usually economises on support. Before buying, send a pre-sales question and see how long a reply takes and whether it is a human. That response time is what you will get when your site is down.
Email, and how much of it
Check how many mailboxes are included and what the sending limits are. Hosts cap outbound mail to prevent spam, and businesses sending newsletters from their hosting account hit those caps without warning.
A control panel you can use
cPanel, DirectAdmin, CWP or similar. You should be able to add an email account, check disk usage and restore a backup without help.
PHP version control
You should be able to see and select your PHP version. Running on an unsupported version is a security risk, and mismatches between what your site needs and what the server provides cause errors that are hard to diagnose.
Server location: useful, not decisive
Physical distance affects latency, so a server closer to your visitors helps โ and faster pages both rank and convert better.
But location is routinely oversold. A well-configured server in Europe behind a CDN frequently outperforms a poorly configured local one, and a CDN caches your content near your visitors regardless of where the origin sits. Ask about actual measured performance and whether a CDN is included, rather than treating a flag on a map as the specification.
What to be sceptical about
"Unlimited" anything
Unlimited storage, bandwidth and sites do not exist. What exists is a fair-use policy, and the real limits are often buried in it โ frequently as inode caps (total number of files) or CPU and concurrent-process limits. A site can be throttled while nominally having "unlimited" space. Ask for the actual numbers.
The renewal cliff
The biggest hidden cost in hosting. An introductory price may apply to the first term only, with renewal at several times that rate โ and the headline figure often assumes you prepay for multiple years. Ask what you will pay at renewal, for a one-year term, and get it in writing.
Migration and setup fees
Check whether moving an existing site is free. Some hosts charge per site, some include it.
Backups as an upsell
If backups cost extra, add that to the real price before comparing.
Overselling
Some shared hosts put far too many accounts on one machine. Symptoms are inconsistent speed โ fine at night, slow in business hours. Hard to detect before buying, which is why reputation and support responsiveness matter more than the specification sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I host my website anywhere and still use my own domain?
Yes. Domain and hosting are separate services. You point the domain's nameservers or DNS records at whichever host you choose, and you can change host later without changing domain.
How much disk space do I actually need?
Far less than most packages advertise. A typical brochure site with optimised images uses very little. Space is rarely the real constraint โ inode counts, CPU limits and email sending caps bite long before storage does.
What is an inode limit?
The total number of files and folders your account may hold. Every image, script, email and cached file counts. Sites with large media libraries or heavy caching hit inode caps while still showing plenty of free space, and the account gets throttled or blocked from writing.
Is managed WordPress hosting worth the extra?
It can be, if it genuinely includes updates, security scanning and staging. It is not worth it if it is ordinary shared hosting with a different label. Ask specifically what is managed and by whom.
How do I move hosts without downtime?
Copy the site to the new host first, test it there, then change DNS. Keep the old account running for a week or two while propagation completes. Never cancel the old host before the new one is verified working.
My site is slow โ is it the hosting?
Usually not. Oversized images, too many plugins and bloated page builders cause most slowness. Check those first; hosting is the cause when the server itself is slow to respond regardless of what page you request.
A short buying checklist
- SSD/NVMe storage
- Free SSL that auto-renews
- Daily backups, self-service restore, tested
- 99.9% uptime commitment and a status page
- Renewal price in writing, for a one-year term
- Stated inode, CPU and email-sending limits
- Free migration of your existing site
- PHP version you can select
- Support you have actually tested with a pre-sales question
- A clear exit: can you take a full backup and leave?
That last point is the one people skip. Good hosting does not need to trap you.
How much should it cost?
For a small business brochure site, shared hosting is a modest annual cost โ small enough that choosing on price alone is a false economy. The difference between the cheapest option and a well-run one is usually less per year than a single lost enquiry.
Where cost rises meaningfully is with traffic, large stores, or a need for predictable performance. At that point a VPS is the sensible step.
